Prime Minister Outlines Initiative to Further Develop the Pharmaceutical Industry by 2020
The Russian government took a major step towards developing its pharmaceutical industry with an announcement made during a recent meeting at ChemRar Hi-Tech Center, a ChemDiv’s Research Facility located in Moscow, Russia. The meeting held with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Moscow Regional Governor Boris Gromov, the Minister of Health and Social Development Tatyana Golikova, the Minister of Industry and Trade Viktor Khristenko and company officials outlined the future development of the industry by the year 2020.
In announcing this major initiative, “The Strategy of Pharmaceutical Industry Development in the Russian Federation for the Period Up to the Year 2020,” Prime Minister Putin emphasized that the strategic goal of the program is to meet the pharmaceutical and medical devices needs of the Russian market by the year 2020. The government’s ultimate plan is to achieve a 90 percent rate of domestically produced vital and essential drugs and a 50 percent rate of medical equipment production by a year of 2020. At the same time Russia will strengthen its position in international markets by drastically increasing imports of pharmaceutical products. In the announcement, the government committed $6 billion towards kick starting the initiative. The allocation of funds will serve as a starting capital for industry modernization and initiate an innovative breakthrough in the pharmaceutical and biotech markets. “The total investment under the federal program is $6 Billion, including $3.97 billion from the federal budget. I believe that the public funds should be applied towards initiation of vital research projects and technological upgrade of 160 enterprises,” said Putin. “…we will build a new industry that is attractive to investments and will generate innovation and create better jobs. And most importantly, it will supply competitive, safe, high-quality, and affordable products for the citizens and our public health.” ChemDiv’s modern hi-tech development facility carries out a full cycle of preclinical and clinical development of new drugs and medical compounds, including developing finished dosage forms and producing novel drugs. Over the last two years, new formulas to treat diseases of the central nervous system (such as Alzheimer’s disease) and viral diseases (Hepatitis C) were developed on the company’s premises. In addition, a number of promising molecules in the field of oncology are now in late preclinical stage. For many years ChemRar Hi Tech Center has been serving as a leading partner in major government contracts for developing new drugs.
Prime Minister Putin endorsed ChemDiv’s Research Center international resources and noted, “They instantly collaborate with European partners by having established a close contact and cooperation.”
